Advancing the Call for Fair Funding in Rural Communities

Last week, the Rural Services Network (RSN) alongside 57 rural local authorities across England took a significant step forward by sending a joint letter to the Rt Hon Jim McMahon MP, advocating for fairer funding in the upcoming Local Government Finance Settlement. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with additional rural local authorities coming forward to express their support and join the cause.

Our efforts emphasise the crucial need for equitable resource allocation that allows rural communities to sustain essential services and unlock their full potential. The disparity in funding has long placed rural areas at a disadvantage, with urban councils benefiting from significantly higher per capita government funding. This not only stifles growth but places an undue financial burden on our residents through higher council taxes and lower-than-average wages.

The campaign for fair funding is ongoing, and it is not too late to make your voice heard. We invite all members who have not yet signed up to review the details and consider whether they can lend their support to this important movement.

Alongside this initiative, the RSN’s Delivering for Rural campaign continues to give emphasis to the need for targeted financial plans that consider the unique challenges rural areas face—from higher service delivery costs to aging populations needing more support. This initiative is not just about securing necessary funds; it's about paving the way for a sustainable future where rural economies can thrive.
