Combating Energy Inefficiency and Fuel Poverty in North Yorkshire's Rural Homes

85% of North Yorkshire is classified as a super sparse rural area, encompassing two National Parks. Many properties in these remote locations consist of older housing stock, presenting challenges in energy efficiency and contributing to fuel poverty.

Energy affordability continues to be an almost universal issue nationally and across North Yorkshire. Whether it is regarding the increase in energy costs, or the energy efficiency of properties across the region, there are organisations who can provide advice and support.

Warm and Well is the dedicated energy advice team at North Yorkshire Citizens Advice and Law Centre. The team includes accredited Domestic Energy Assessors who provide Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) across the county. These certificates help homeowners and tenants understand their property's energy efficiency and identify potential improvements.

If a property has an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G and the resident is on a low income, they may qualify for free or subsidised insulation installation through available schemes.

Beyond EPCs, experienced advisors offer practical energy-saving tips, assistance with Priority Services Register sign-ups, and financial support such as fuel vouchers for prepayment meters. The team is also able to support clients with income maximisation and refer internally for more in depth holistic support if required.

Over the last year the team has advised almost 6,500 clients with over 55,000 issues and supported over £9 million in income gains through benefit calculations, energy efficiency measures and other savings that could be made.

The Energy Advice team is available via a dedicated phone line, alternatively, a referral form can be found on their website. Additionally, Energy Champions visit various locations throughout the year to raise awareness of our services, discuss key energy issues, and highlight the support available.
