The government has announced a significant £1 billion investment to boost bus services across England, aimed at improving accessibility and reducing the disparities in bus service quality across different regions. This funding initiative, announced by the Department for Transport and The Rt Hon Louise Haigh MP is set to change public transport by supporting and protecting crucial bus services, keeping fares low, and ensuring more reliable services.
This financial commitment includes £955 million to be spent on supporting bus services until 2026, with £712 million allocated to local authorities and an additional £243 million directed towards bus operators. The government states that the funding will benefit every region in England, with a particular focus on historically underserved rural areas and small towns.
The investment is aimed at enhancing service availability in urban regions while expanding services in less served areas, thus promoting a more equitable distribution of transport resources. The government has expressed its commitment to ending the "bus postcode lottery" and is taking steps to empower councils to regain control over local bus services, encouraging a shift towards London-style bus networks across the country.
Significant funding recipients include Leicester, the Isle of Wight, Torbay, and the combined authorities of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, highlighting the government's intention to cover diverse geographical areas. These funds are expected to safeguard popular and essential rural routes, improve punctuality, and increase bus usage for various daily activities, which is crucial for communities that rely heavily on public transport.
Furthermore, the announcement details a reformed funding allocation process designed to minimise competition for funds and ensure that allocations are based on actual needs, including factors like local deprivation and population.
