The Herts Advertiser reports that a government planning policy which threatens local Green Belt is being challenged by St Albans MP Daisy Cooper

The issue was raised to her by the Campaign for Colney, a pressure group campaigning against the Bowmans Cross development, which could see the merging of London Colney and Colney Heath villages.

Neighbouring Hertsmere Borough Council identified the land as one of its preferred sites for development in its draft Local Plan, with a view to build up to 6,000 homes.

Daisy Cooper MP emphasised that one of the main purposes of the Green Belt was to maintain green boundaries between towns and villages, with the proposal eradicates boundaries between villages and the new homes altogether.

Research from the Campaign to Protect Rural England shows that these new homes won’t tackle the housing crisis either, as of the 17,698 homes completed in England from 2015-2020, only just over 10% were affordable.

Daisy Cooper MP is urging the Housing Secretary to update the National Planning Policy Framework to address the issue of rogue planning inspectors, as well as highlighting the need for more local council powers to enforce the building of homes which have already been approved.
