National Rural Conference 2024: Speaker Spotlight

With the National Rural Conference 2024 just days away, anticipation is building for what promises to be a landmark event in rural policy and community development. Running virtually from 16th to 19th September, this year's conference will provide an essential platform for discussing critical issues such as transport, housing, and community sustainability. In this spotlight, we are thrilled to introduce expert speakers who will share their insights and expertise across a variety of topics crucial to rural development.

Dr. Stephen Goss – Policy & Research Manager, Campaign for Better Transport

Dr. Stephen Goss, a leading expert in transport policy, will take part in the Rural Transport Session on Thursday 19th September. With over a decade of experience spanning academia, politics, and public policy, Stephen currently serves as Policy & Research Manager at the Campaign for Better Transport. His career includes working on key transport initiatives across the UK, including in Northern Ireland, and his passion for integrated, affordable, and environmentally sustainable public transport is sure to resonate with attendees.

Robert Singleton – MRTPI, MCIHT, Senior Housing and Planning Consultant

Robert Singleton will speak in the Rural Affordable Housing and Planning Session on Tuesday 17th September, where he will offer his deep expertise in strategic planning and housing development. With a background that includes key roles at Transport for London and other urban development projects, Robert’s insights will focus on planning and housing strategies that are adaptable to rural needs. His forward-thinking approach to sustainable development will be crucial for those focused on rural housing challenges.

Cllr Ian Bark – Leader, Bridport Town Council

Cllr Ian Bark will bring his extensive experience to the Community Services Discussion on Wednesday 18th September, sharing how local efforts can lead to significant change. As Leader of Bridport Town Council, Cllr Bark has driven initiatives like the Plastic Free Bridport campaign and mass litter picks, all while supporting climate and sustainability projects. His leadership and community activism will inspire discussions on how local governments and grassroots organisations can address rural challenges effectively.

Rural Statistics Team, Defra
Represented by: Beth Kerwin, Stephen Hall, Martin Fowell, Sarah Harriss

The Community Services Discussion will also feature the Rural Statistics Team from Defra, led by Stephen Hall, who has directed the team for nearly 12 years. They will present essential data on rural England, covering topics such as the Statistical Digest of Rural England, Rural Urban Classification, and the Rural England Prosperity Fund. Their work provides a foundation for rural policy decisions, ensuring that statistical insights drive meaningful change in rural communities.
