John Campion, chief of West Mercia Police attacked the Government’s funding formula for ‘unfairly penalising’ rural forces. Campion wrote the letter because West Midlands Police, a force covering a more urban area, receives more money per head than the rural West Mercia force.
The chief of the West Midlands force, David Jamieson, argued that his force merited more money because of higher crime rates in urban areas he cited Office for National Statistics figures that show the West Midlands has 33 per cent more crime per 1,000 of the population that West Mercia.
