Poor mobile connectivity is a significant issue for many rural residents and businesses
The Rural Services Network is therefore pleased that agreement has been reached for more mast sharing between mobile network operators as a means to improve the signal in poorly served rural areas - something we have been calling for. The joint investment in the necessary infrastructure by network operators and Government is welcome.
However, the target date for the Shared Rural Network to reach its target of 95% coverage by 4G networks is notably slower than the Government's previously stated ambition of 2022. This is disappointing. Given this slower timescale we want to see interim targets being set to drive forward deployment and ensure that benefits start to flow quickly. Rural areas cannot afford to wait another six years.
