Rural residents will pay £800 more per year to keep driving

The Daily Express reports that rural households that depend on their cars are having to spend nearly £800 a year more on fuel than people who live in urban areas, according to research by the Countryside Alliance

The study claims that people in rural communities use their cars much more than people in towns and cities and also have to pay more at the local pump, spending 47% more than their urban neighbours.

The impact of soaring petrol and diesel prices on the cost of living crisis outlined in the reports has fuelled demands for a VAT cut.

Richard Foord, the newly elected Liberal Democrat MP for Tiverton and Honiton following last week’s by-election, said voters raised the cost of fuel during the campaign.

His party is pushing for the Rural Fuel Duty Relief Scheme, which offers a 5p-per-litre reduction to retailers in just a handful of remote parts of the UK, to be doubled and extended.
