The Department for Transport announced that the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS), which provides up to £350 towards a charge point, will continue next year and be expanded to target people in rented and leasehold accommodation.
This follows recommendations in a new report by The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee on improving air quality. In particular, the Committee called on the Government for more electric car charging points in rural areas, to ‘ensure that capacity and coverage is in place across the country, and especially in rural areas, to enable people to switch away from petrol and diesel cars’.
The report also highlighted continued issues around rural connectivity, highlighting that people in rural areas could particularly benefit from a move to online public services given the increased distances they need to travel to access physical ones, but that in practice they struggled to access them owing to poor connectivity.
The Committee called on the Government to reform policy and legislation to facilitate the roll out of fibre connectivity.
